This comprehensive book explains our Ready 4 Learning foundation/precursor skills, why they are important and provides simple ‘assessments’ to see if your children have the foundation skills they need to support curriculum learning. It also provides a variety of activities teachers and parents can do with no expensive resources to help develop children’s all important foundation skills.

Movement Resources

Before the serious learning of reading, writing and maths, children need a sound foundation of key skills and dispositions to make this possible. These skills need to be automatic to free the brain up to think about the learning task at hand. To be able to sit at a table and write their name, the body needs to sit upright (the highest form of balance), hold a pencil correctly (gross and fine motor skills), and write across the page (cross the midline). We need to provide our children with multiple opportunities to practice these skills in order to develop automaticity. Listening resources

Strong listening skills are the building blocks of reading and spelling. Before children can read, they need to hear and manipulate sounds in spoken language — this is phonological awareness. It includes recognising rhyme, clapping syllables, and isolating individual sounds in words. Children who develop these skills find it much easier to crack the code of reading and spelling. Auditory memory — holding and recalling what they hear — supports children in following instructions, learning vocabulary, and retaining information.
