Listening resources

Strong listening skills are the building blocks of reading and spelling. Before children can read, they need to hear and manipulate sounds in spoken language — this is phonological awareness. It includes recognising rhyme, clapping syllables, and isolating individual sounds in words. Children who develop these skills find it much easier to crack the code of reading and spelling. Auditory memory — holding and recalling what they hear — supports children in following instructions, learning vocabulary, and retaining information.
